Make plans to attend the GFoundation’s next Annual General Meeting, Sunday September 27 at the Spilstead Hall in Beaver County (Click Here for directions).

The success of last month’s ‘Great Divide’ native tree and seed planting hosted by the Miquelon Watershed Stewardship Committee (MWSC) in the Beaver Hills Biosphere (BHB) will be a main item on our agenda.

You will remember that the initial ‘Great Divide’ tree planting event in June was postponed due to rains. Yet one-third of original participants rescheduled their calendar to join an enthusiastic crowd one week later to complete the planting.

A campfire potluck ended a bright and sunny day for everyone, thanks to the many volunteers who helped make it a success.

Your feedback on the video that was produced from the event would be most appreciated: CLICK HERE.

Our Annual Meeting will consider issues and lessons arising from our ‘Great Divide’ event:

MWSC: Continue support for the Miquelon Watershed Stewardship Committee. The MWSC co-hosted the ‘Great Divide’ event with the Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA) and the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA). Feedback is invited for a new draft MWSC Web page (CLICK HERE).

Tree Planting: Continue to promote tree planting and undertake efforts to track and report tree loss and gains over time. This year, trees were planted on 15 different properties and associated with MWSC.

Evidence-based approaches: Adopt evidence-based approaches for GFoundation activities, facilitated by sound monitoring. We welcome the involvement of the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) and Services for Environmental Sensor Research (SENSR). A GF wildlife monitoring initiative has been established.

Indigenous Partnership: Pursue partnership agreement the GF has signed with the Edmonton Heyoka Healing Society (EHHS), which places monitoring as the centerpiece of a ‘Pathway’ created to integrate traditional indigenous knowledge into wetland stewardship” CLICK HERE.
