A new development plan for Beaver County was recently adopted, which incorporates amendments requested by the Global Foundation for Social Harmony & Sustainable Development to include wetland protections when issuing licenses and permits for future development applications.

GFoundation Vice-President Judith Basisty said the changes follow written submissions and public hearing appearances, over the last year and resulted in the addition of wetland protections for Beaver County’s vision of goals and for County Residential Development within the Beaver Hills Biosphere.

Wetlands were also considered and incorporated into the development of recreation and green spaces, environmentally sensitive areas and for planning and implementation measures thus enabling wetland assessments.

“The changes speak highly of the Beaver County’s commitments to involve its citizens in its policy development and practices and sends a clear message to individuals that its worth getting involved in local efforts to support County initiatives”.

In Alberta a municipal development plan (MDP) is a key policy document that shapes and guides long term land uses and changes in any County or municipality.

GFoundation’s history of involvement with Beaver County began in 2019 when it worked with landowners to block the sale of environment reserved land by the municipality. In 2021 GFoundation successfully supported the passage of a water surface bylaw by the county.
