{"id":2487,"date":"2025-01-28T15:09:35","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T22:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/?post_type=news&#038;p=2487"},"modified":"2025-01-29T22:55:11","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T05:55:11","slug":"unbio-2-2","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/news\/unbio-2-2\/","title":{"rendered":"GF plans volunteer oversight of 120,000 acres of Beaver Hills Biosphere"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"mobileWidthFormating wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">January 28, 2025: The Global Foundation for Social Harmony &amp; Sustainable Development (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gfoundation.ca\/\">GFoundation<\/a>) has launched a new <em>GF Miquelon Watershed Stewardship Committee<\/em> to provide for oversight of about 120,000 acres (48,500 hectares) of globally significant wetlands that lie within the southern portion of the UN-designated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaverhills.ca\/\">Beaver Hills Biosphere<\/a> east of Edmonton, Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A two-year consultation process involving landowners from the region, with representatives from key conservation, indigenous and watershed organisations, municipal counties, Alberta Parks, as well as business culminated in the first meeting of the committee\u2019s Working Group last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interim Chair of the committee, Noel St Jean, said \u201cWe want to design and implement \u2018on-the-ground\u2019 environmental activities to promote, protect or restore fairly extensive tracts of rural land within the Battle River or North Saskatchewan River watersheds, an area that spans four rural municipalities.\u201d He added that the group will organise a tree planting in the Spring, followed in the Fall by the delivery of an information package to landowners and residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GFoundation Executive Director Lucien Royer says the new self- directed group will take its place amongst other non-profit watershed stewardship groups in Alberta that are taking community-level actions to safeguard water sources.
