{"id":2406,"date":"2024-10-06T17:09:05","date_gmt":"2024-10-06T23:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/?post_type=news&#038;p=2406"},"modified":"2024-10-06T17:09:05","modified_gmt":"2024-10-06T23:09:05","slug":"un-day","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/news\/un-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Foundation Celebrates UN Day of Older Persons by planting trees for climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"mobileWidthFormating wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Global Foundation has added its voice to those of thousands of seniors involved in over 70 <a href=\"https:\/\/seniorsforclimateactionnow.org\/seniors-for-climate\/\">Seniors for Climate (SFC)<\/a> events across Canada calling for more concerted action on climate change NOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the October 1st International Day of Older Persons, the Global Foundation for Social Harmony and Sustainable Development (GF) hosted a special planting of tamarack trees at its Beaver County headquarters near Camrose and Tofield, Alberta, within the UN-designated Beaver Hills Biosphere (BHB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"681\" height=\"397\" src=\"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image001.jpg 681w, https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image001-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image001-600x350.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 681px) 100vw, 681px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following a flag raising, speakers from GF, SFC and the Edmonton Chapter of the Congress of Union Retirees (CURC) provided brief introductions, while the SFC banner displayed its visible message: \u201cLater is Too Late\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants wearing caps bearing the word \u201cemissions\u201d carried their trees along a wilderness trail to plant them amongst globally significant wetlands; highlighting the pressing need to cut CO2 emissions, everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image001-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2410\" style=\"width:347px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image001-1-1.jpg 474w, https:\/\/gfoundation.ca\/staging\/7325\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/image001-1-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing numbers of tamarack (and other species) are succumbing to insect proliferations because of climate change. Tamaracks are the only conifer to lose its needles in the Fall, and have played a unique geological role by absorbing CO2 in vast quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GF President Winston Gereluk said, \u201cSeniors vote, advocate, and care deeply. We call on our leaders to recognize the climate crisis as the defining issue of our time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We demand bold, decisive action now,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CURC President Judy Lederer said seniors are increasingly impatient with the pace of decision-making by all levels of government on issues ranging from inadequate seniors care to climate change. Events on October 1st reflect our demands that governments step up with actions NOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SCF volunteers at the event claimed that seniors are demonstrating the power of collective action.
